So, computers use binary numbers to represent everything inside them. Computer instructions at the machine level are composed of binary numbers that direct the computer to perform actions.
The instruction must tell the computer what to do (add, move, decision, etc.), what to use (which data to use), where to put the results, etc. Don't stop here, DATA or information is also represented as binary 1's and 0's; but they are sets of specific bit combinations for representing a set of characters.

1-What is telecommunications?
The simplest kind is when two computers are connected together over a phone line to share data. The data may be a chat between two users, a document going from one computer to the other.

2-Describe some typical uses of telecommunications using computers.
Paying bills, doing in-depeth research on a topic, to just chatting with other computer users.

9- How many different characters can be represented during data communication if your modem software is set for 7 data bits ? For 8 bits?
7 data bits-128 characters
8 data bits-256 characters

15-What is the relationship between communication speed and cost of the commmunication line?
You need to tell the software at which speed to work at. The software will then send the proper commands to the modem to set that speed. The modems at each end of a connection must be running at the same speed.

16-Compare the relative speeds of typical local area networks with that of typical communication connections for wide area networks.
Even the wide area network's faster communication links operate rather slowly compared with the local area netwrok speeds to which users have become accustomed.

1. What is a packet?
A packet is made of bytes that sends information from one place to another. An email message leaves as packets, and a Web page that you receive comes as a series of packets.

2. What is a configuration table?
A configuration table is a collection of information, including:Information on which connections lead to particular groups of addresses.Priorities for connections to be used.Rules for handling both routine and special cases of traffic.

3. What are the two jobs of a router?
Routers are used to send messages to and from other computers.A router links two networks and connects both networks to the Internet.

4. Under “Transmitting Packets” what different routes (e.g. copper wiring) may information take?
Copper cables, or satellites.

5. The largest routers used to handle data at the major traffic points on the Internet are most like _________ rather than office routers.

6. Routing Packets: What is a subnet mask?
This tells the router that all messages with the sender and receiver having an address sharing the first three groups of numbers are on the same network, and shouldn't be sent out to another network.

7. What is a logical address?
This describes a way someone can get a message to you. It is your state city and street address.

8.What is a MAC Address?
The chances are very good that you'll never see the MAC address for any of your equipment because the software that helps your computer communicate with a network takes care of matching the MAC address to a logical address.
